What is an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is a sophisticated check of your heart health.

Why the NHS Health Check is important

Even if you’re feeling well now, the NHS Health Check will help to identify any potential risks before they become a problem.

Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia - the good news is that these conditions can often be prevented.

The NHS Health Check allows you to be better prepared for the future and to be able to take steps to maintain or improve your health.

What happens at an NHS Health Check?

  • The check takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
  • You’ll be asked some simple questions. For example, about your family history and any medication you are currently taking.
  • Your height, weight, age, sex and ethnicity will all be recorded.
  • Your blood pressure will be taken.
  • You will have a simple blood test to check your cholesterol level.

After the NHS Health Check you’ll be taken through your results and given personalised advice on how to lower any risks and stay healthy.

Falls Prevention

Each year about one-third of all people over age 65 will fall. Many of these falls result in broken bones. The consequences of falls can be significant, particularly for older people.

In Northamptonshire, organisations are working in partnership to prevent falls and enable people to remain independent and well. Together they have developed a new strategy which identifies the next steps that need to be taken to transform the county's falls prevention and bone health services.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Sessions

Chair based exercise class, social gathering after the class, GPs and MS nurses refer patients.

Please speak to your GP if you think you may be eligible.

Restart are sessions designed and delivered for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients, mixture of chair based and gym based exercises.

COPD describes a group of lung conditions that make it difficult to empty air out of the lungs because your airways have been narrowed.

If you have COPD, being active and exercising can help you to improve your breathing, your fitness and your quality of life. Don’t avoid activities that make you breathless: you’ll get less fit and out of breath more easily. Regular exercise can help reverse this by strengthening your muscles. Exercise also benefits your heart and blood pressure, and makes you less likely to develop conditions such as diabetes and osteoporosis (fragile bone disease).

Please speak to your GP if you think you may be eligible.
