New 50Plus Activities Coming to Duston:

Looking to get fit and active this year?  Not sure where to start?  Want to prove age is just a number?  Then join us for a variety of activities just for you.  Northampton Leisure Trust has recently secured Sport England Small Grants funding to introduce a variety of activities to support older adults from Duston and surrounding areas to get and stay active.

Activities will be suitable for all ages and ability, and deigned to help you get kit fit and active alongside making new friends and having fun.  New sessions and events will be added throughout the year so keep an eye out for our timetable updates.

Bowls: truly a sport for all, regards of age or ability - it takes seconds to learn and the coaches from Express Bowls Club will be there to give you instructions on how to master.  Please note this will be an outdoors session on the bowls green next to Duston Sports Centre


Day: Monday

First Session: 21 May

Time: 11:00am-12:00pm

Cost: LC £3.50 / NM £4.00


Walking Football: if you thought your football career was over, think again!  Walking Football is a slower paced version of the game, aimed at the over 50’s.  Smaller pitches and plenty of breaks ensure you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable return to football.  The slower pace doesn’t detract from the competition though - it’s much more than a walk in the park.

First session: 30 April

Time: 2:00-3:30pm

Cost: LC £4.00 / NM £4.50


Day: Thursday

First session: 3 May

Time: 2:00-3:00pm

Cost: LC £3.50 / NM £4.00


Racket Sports: a drop in and play sessions, this is your opportunity to whack it and smash it.  Give badminton a go, turn your hand to table tennis or why not dust off your tennis racket for short tennis - it’s not just for Wimbledon fortnight!  All equipment is provide.


Day: Tuesday 

First session: 1 May

Time: 11:00am-12:00pm

Cost: LC £3.50 / NM £4.00


Walking Netball: is a slower version of the game; it is netball but at walking pace.  The game has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level.  From those who have dropped out of the sport they love due to serious injury, to those who believed they had hung up their netball trainers many years ago - walking netball really is for everyone.


Day: Tuesday

First session: 1 May

Time: 2:00-3:00pm

Cost: LC £3.50 / NM £4.00


Boccia and New Age Kurling: can you be on target with our new activities?  Boccia is similar to bowls but played seated, working in teams you look to get your balls closest to the jack.  New Age Kurling similar to its icy equivalent, participants aim to role the stones towards the target.


Day: Wednesday

First session: 2 May

Time: 3:00-4:00pm

Cost: LC £3.50 / NM £4.00

Dance Fit: show off your fancy footwork with these dance fit classes that are a mix of Zumba and aerobics.  Suitable for complete beginners and strictly stars.

First session: 4 May

Time: 2:30-3:30pm

Cost: LC £3.50 / £4.00

Activity Buddies support members of their peer group to overcome some of the barriers to being physically active alongside campaigning for healthy living and successful ageing. 

Activity Buddies will be a friendly and welcoming face at a variety of activities including 50 Plus Days, health walks and classes, helping to provide information and answering questions.

map markerGetting Started With Your First Session

Not exercised in a while, feeling a bit unsure what to do.  Do not worry our friendly and welcoming staff are on hand to support you getting started.  It doesn’t matter about your ability or fitness level, activities will be suitable for all and are a chance to make new friends whilst being a bit more active. 

Top tips for getting started with our sessions

  • You will be asked to complete a registration form at your first session.  Save time by downloading it here and bringing with you
  • Wear comfortable, sports clothing - jogging bottoms, t-shirt, lycra leggings?  It’s up to you
  • Comfortable trainers are recommended (For health walks please wear shoes you feel comfortable in)
  • Be prepared to have fun whilst working at your own pace
  • Have questions, ask the instructors they are there to help
  • If you want to use one of our lockers bring a padlock with you
  • Water fountains are available - just bring your own bottle (drinks machines are available on site)
  • Changing and showering facilities are available to use
  • Join us after sessions in the coffee box for a drink or make use of the free wifi, check opening times here
