“The refurbishment work at Mounts Baths Leisure Centre is an investment that is important to customers and the community. I am pleased that investment in modern, welcoming and accessible facilities will benefit so many people.”

Melanie, Mounts Baths Customer

We are pleased to announce that Northampton Borough Council (NBC) in partnership with Northampton Leisure Trust (NLT) and with the support of Sport England, Swim England and Northamptonshire Sport will be making considerable improvements to Mounts Baths swimming changing rooms.

Mounts Baths, opened in 1936, is an iconic facility, one of only two art deco facilities in the country.  The centre has many of its original features and is a listed designated Grade II building, a principal reason for its listing is that it’s a particularly good example of a Modern Movement swimming pool. NLT is a member of the Historic Pools of Britain Association which supports projects which protect and restore historic pools.

map marker Why are the changes needed?

The current changing facilities introduced in 1989 have a poor layout with a limited number of cubicles and do not lend themselves to the variety of users such as schools, families and disabled groups. This makes it difficult to deliver a balanced programme and maintain the highest standards of cleanliness resulting in customer dissatisfaction. Our recent changing facility survey (150 customers), showed 40% of customers wouldn’t recommend the facility to friends due to poor layout, tired facilities and inadequate showers.

map marker What are the changes?

The project will address the issues outlined by our customers through the introduction of a changing village in line with Sport England specifications.

Although we are creating a modern changing facility we intend where possible to use colours which are sympathetic to Mounts Baths art deco origins.

The benefits of the changes include:

  • Improved layout and an increased sense of space
  • Increased number of cubicles
  • More showers
  • New toilet furniture
  • Improved air circulation
  • Improved facilities for customers with disabilities
  • New lockers
  • Group changing provision will increase in size
  • Energy efficient lightening, heating and drainage

The overall design will be easier to clean and maintain, providing a much improved customer experience.

In addition to the changing room programme we will be renewing pipework to the swimming pools and installing a UV disinfection system which will further improve the water quality and overall swimming experience for all.

Furthermore we have plans to make improvements to the toilets located in the main reception foyer area.

A grant of £300,000 has been secured from Sport England. Northampton Borough Council is also providing financial support along with investment from Northampton Leisure Trust.

map markerWhen will this happen?

The building work will start on November 20 and will be completed by April 2018. Health and safety is of upmost importance during the work therefore the current swimming pool changing room area will be shut during this time. Temporary changing facilities will be provided.

We are creating a group changing area on pool side next to the teaching pool for our junior swimmers.

Additional changing with baby changing facilities will be located in the current staff room near to the teaching pool.  Further changing space will be available in temporary cubicles located on the poolside next to the main pool and in the current male and female gym/ health suite changing rooms.

Please note during the programme of works there will be limited toilet and showering facilities.

If you have additional changing requirements please contact the centre in advance of your visit.  We can discuss the facilities we have at Mounts Baths during the improvement programme and our alterative facilities within Northampton.

Very few lessons will be affected and for those that are we will contact customers individually.

We recommend where possible during November to March your child attends their lesson with their swimming costume under their clothes, this will help with changing arrangements.

map markerPool programme changes

There are some minor changes to the programme which will take effect Monday 20 November through to March 2018.

The main pool will be closed from Monday 4 December to Friday 22 December 2017 to allow the plant which operates the pool to be improved. This means:

  • All Trilogy Supergold, 60+ and student members are encouraged to use Cripps during general swimming sessions during this time (unfortunately Cripps is not able to accommodate Leisure Card or Non Member swimmers)
  • There will be no fitness classes in the main pool during this time

Pool timetables for Danes Camp and Lings can be found here

Fitness class timetables can be found here
